New Standards Playlist

Why was the “New Standards” playlist added?
“New Standards” is a monumental publication and effort led by Terri Lyne Carrington — multi-Grammy-winning artist, NEA Jazz Master, and founder/artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. We added this not only because of its value in highlighting the historical omission of women composers in jazz, but also because the music is simply amazing.
About the book “New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers”.
“New Standards” is a monumental publication curated by Terri Lyne Carrington. The book includes compositions spanning nearly a century — from Lil Hardin Armstrong’s work in 1922 to pieces written in 2021 by recent Berklee graduates. It features 101 compositions by a remarkable range of acknowledged titans, young visionaries, and unsung heroes of jazz. These pieces serve as powerful alternatives to the traditional jazz standard canon. Genius Jamtracks is proud to include this playlist as part of our mission to offer students and musicians meaningful, high-quality practice tools. This is not just a beautiful collection of music — it’s a timely and essential statement.

Polyrhythms

Polyrhythms? Learn more.
Polyrhythms are at the core of Genius Jamtracks. From subtle displacements to full-on rhythmic puzzles, dive deeper and shape your practice with intentional rhythmic exploration.
What is the “Rhythm” button?
By pressing the “Rhythm” button, you access the Level, Groupings, and Ratios tabs, where you can experiment with and control the rhythmic content. Based on your choices, the app introduces polyrhythmic phrases — from simple and familiar to more advanced and challenging.
What’s a polyrhythm?
A polyrhythm is the combination of two or more different rhythms that follow the same pulse. For example, in a 4/4 measure, one layer could play in 4 while another divides the measure into 3 beats — a 3:4 or 'three against four' polyrhythm. When played together, they form a complex, unified rhythmic phrase.
What do “Level”, “Groupings”, and “Ratios” mean? How are they different?
All three introduce polyrhythms, but in different ways. 'Level' controls how complex the rhythm is without letting you pick the exact patterns. Level 1 has no polyrhythms, Level 2 introduces basic ones (e.g. dotted rhythms, 3:4), and higher levels include complex phrases like triplets in groups of 17. With 'Groupings' and 'Ratios', you pick the specific polyrhythm. Groupings are based on note values (e.g. eighth notes) and how many fit into a cycle. Ratios describe the relationship between the main rhythm and the superimposed rhythm (e.g. 3:4).
How do I use the wheel pickers in Groupings?
In Groupings mode, use the left wheel to select the note value (e.g. 8th notes) and the right wheel to pick how many of those notes complete the rhythmic cycle. Note: available options vary with tempo, since not all groupings fit well at all speeds.
What does “Ratios” refer to?
Ratios describe the relationship between the main song rhythm and a superimposed rhythm. For example, in 4/4, layering 3 evenly spaced beats gives a 3:4 ratio — a classic polyrhythmic feel.
When choosing a polyrhythm, do all three instruments introduce it during playback?
No — you choose which instruments apply the selected rhythm. Under the wheel pickers, tap the instrument names to enable or disable polyrhythmic phrasing for each. You can have just drums play it, or piano and bass, or any combination.
How does Tempo affect the polyrhythmic content?
Not all polyrhythms work in every tempo. Some phrases sound awkward if played too fast or too slow, so they’re disabled depending on the current tempo — just like how swing feel evolves with speed.
Is there a tutorial for Polyrhythms?
Yes! Visit our website to watch users in action, including a detailed series by the amazing Sami Amiris — exploring, practicing, and applying polyrhythms in musical settings.

Harmony

What is the “Harmony” button?
This is where you can adjust the harmonic complexity of the playback — from simplified triads to advanced reharmonizations. On Level 1, you’ll hear triads. As you move up the levels, the harmony becomes richer: Level 2 plays exactly what’s written on the chart; Level 3 introduces jazz piano voicings; Level 4 adds basic substitutions; and Level 5 brings more advanced substitutions and creative reharmonizations. Whether you set a specific harmonic level or just press play and let Genius Jamtracks create your session, you'll still get voice-led piano comping and melodic, reactive bass lines.
What's included in Harmony Levels 1–5?
Level 1: Triads
Level 2: Exactly what's written on the chart
Level 3: Jazz harmony with standard voicings
Level 4: Basic harmonic substitutions
Level 5: Advanced substitutions and reharmonizations
Can the App play what is written in terms of harmony?
Yes. Set the Harmony Level to 2 to hear exactly what’s written on the chart.

Player

Time Placement
This unique feature lets you shift the time feel of each individual player. Experiment with having any of the trio play ahead of the beat, behind the beat, or right on it. You can fine-tune each instrument's placement in relation to the pulse.
What is 'In Front' and 'Behind' in the Time Placement screen?
“In Front” and “Behind” refer to how early or late a note is played relative to the metronomic beat. Playing behind the beat gives a laid-back, relaxed feel. Playing in front of it gives energy and forward momentum.
Does the setting apply to all songs, and does it autosave?
Yes, Time Placement settings are autosaved and apply globally across all songs as a master setting.
How can I adjust the tempo?
Tap the metronome icon (bottom left), then adjust the tempo using the up/down arrows, the slider, or by tapping the tempo. Changing the tempo also influences the trio’s polyrhythmic phrasing and stylistic choices.
How can I change the key in a song?
Tap the 'Key' label and select the key you want to practice in. Your selection will be saved and remembered next time you return to that song.
Can I change the number of choruses the app plays?
Yes. You can choose how many choruses you want — from just one to infinite looping.
Does the app play what is written in terms of harmony?
Yes. Set the Harmony Level to 2 to hear exactly what’s written on the chart.
Does tempo also affect the content?
Yes. Changing the tempo not only adjusts speed but also affects the trio’s stylistic feel and available polyrhythms. GJT adapts to match the vibe and phrasing typical of that tempo range.
Can I adjust the individual volumes of the instruments?
Yes. Tap the “Mixer” icon (bottom right) to control each instrument’s volume, including the metronome.

Editing A Song

How do I edit a song?
The pencil icon has been moved as more features have been added recently. To access editing options, simply long press anywhere on the chart and a new view with the editing tools will appear.
Explain the options for saving, overwriting, and saving as new.
After editing a song, you can press 'Save' to overwrite the existing version in your library. Alternatively, tap the pencil icon next to the song title to rename it before saving — this keeps the original and saves your version separately under a new name.
How many chords can I add in a bar?
You can add up to 4 chords per bar in any time signature, except for 3/4, which allows up to 3 chords per bar.
How do I add a Slash chord?
Enter your chord as usual, then press the slash button (“ / ”) and select the bass note to complete the slash chord.
What is a Slash chord, and where are the chord symbols located?
A slash chord indicates a chord with a specific bass note or inversion, shown after a slash (e.g., C/E). Tap the slash button (“ / ”) to access the list of bass notes and build your chord.

How can I add a Coda?
In Edit mode, go to the Song Form tab and tap “Add Coda” to create a Coda section.
What is the "Coda" symbol (cross in a circle), and how does it function?

How do I add a section in a song?
