JD Walter

Jazz Vocalist, Composer, Educator

Vocalist, educator, and composer JD Walter is regarded by many in the jazz world as one of the foremost jazz singers of his generation. Known for his immediately recognizable smoky sound, his virtuosic command of improvisation, his compelling original compositions, and his ability to reinvent standards, Walter continues to expand the expressive possibilities of the jazz voice.
Over the decades, he has performed as a featured artist at leading jazz clubs and festivals across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Central America, as well as completing more than eighty tours in Russia. A fixture of the New York jazz scene, Walter has headlined at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, Mezzrow, The Blue Note, Smalls and The Jazz Gallery, among other premier venues.
JD has shared the stage and recorded with many of the genre’s most respected artists, including Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Kurt Elling, Taylor Eigsti, Eddie Gomez, Bob Dorough, Nicholas Payton, Jean-Michel Pilc, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Orrin Evans, James Genus, Dave Kikoski, Robin Eubanks, and Eric Revis.
Walter’s life and career are wholly devoted to music. From his early years in boy choirs to earning a full scholarship at the University of North Texas Jazz Program, he has become recognized as a pioneer in vocal improvisation and electronic innovation within jazz. His recording career spans more than twenty-five years, marked by a purist yet progressive approach that has earned international recognition. He has released ten albums as a leader and appeared as a guest on more than one hundred recordings.
Now based in New York City, Walter maintains an active private teaching studio and continues to lecture and present masterclasses worldwide. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Netherlands; Queens College, The New School, and Long Island University in New York City; and The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In late 2022, JD Walter signed a long-term recording agreement with the Grammy-nominated New York label Arkadia Records for the release of multiple new albums.
